This past weekend, four boxing champions stepped into the ring to defend their titles. In addition, former UFC Champion Anderson Silva stepped into the ring to take on Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. In the midst of all that took place, some of the biggest boxing news of the weekend emerged outside of the ring.
During DAZN‘s broadcast of the Jaime Munguía-Kamil Szeremeta middleweight bout, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix shared some news regarding undefeated lightweight contender Ryan Garcia. According to Mannix, Garcia is looking to return to the ring in either August or September. However, an opponent has not yet been identified.
Garcia has remained out of the ring since he beat Luke Campbell to win the interim WBC Lightweight Championship. The lightweight titlist cited mental health issues as the reason for his brief departure from the sport.
“I still struggle everyday with anxiety and depression at times because of my anxiety. I’m here to tell you it’s still possible to reach your dreams,” Garcia wrote on Instagram.
“There is ways to cope, I know I look like someone who is happy all the time but inside I hurt at times struggling just to function but I choose To keep moving forward. I love you guys keep going.”
Potential opponents for Garcia include Devin Haney, Jorge Linares, Javier Fortuna or Richard Commey among others. Given his relationship with the Paul brothers, he could also look to host a co-main event with Jake Paul and Tyrone Woodley in August. The two are set to fight on August 28, but a venue has not been formally announced.
