After securing a unanimous decision victory against Emmanuel Tagoe, unbeaten lightweight contender Ryan Garcia told reporters that would stop calling out other fighters for the time being. Well, he may be walking back that statement. According to a recent report from Boxing Scene, Garcia has eyes set on a former title challenger by the name of Isaac Cruz.
“[Isaac] Cruz, let’s get it on,” Garcia said on Friday.
“Everyone else has a fight. If you win [on Saturday] against Gamboa, I say we get that one on next!”
In order for the fight to take place, Cruz must get by former titleholder Yuriorkis Gamboa of Cuba. Gamboa is coming off of two consecutive losses against fellow lightweight stars Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis. Meanwhile, Cruz has managed to lose just one fight in the last six years. In December, Gervonta Davis earned a narrow decision victory against the Mexican fighter.
As for Garcia, he is looking to fight three times in 2022. He has already earned one win against Tagoe and it doesn’t appear that he will look to make a fight with Gervonta Davis this summer. Therefore, a fight with Cruz looks to be a real possibility.
