Although missing the playoffs for the fifth straight season, The New York Jets finished 10-6 and newly acquired free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick played at the highest level of his career. A year later, Fitzpatrick is set to hit the free agent market, and the Jets have questions at Quarterback, again!
Fitzpatrick adds to the long list of mediocre Quarterbacks that are currently going to hit free agency and will shop around to other teams, in search of the best deal. But the Jets should do the right thing and bring the veteran Quarterback for another season. Having a lot of chemistry with wide receiver Brandon Marshall, Fitzpatrick threw for 3,905 yards and 31 touchdowns which was the best production of his career.
There are plenty of teams in search of a franchise Quarterback, and at the age of 33, Fitzpatrick doesn’t show promise for the long-term and future, but it will certainly be foolish of the Jets to make Fitzpatrick their first priority during free agency.
The Jets have already placed the franchise tag of defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson to secure his roster spot for the 2016 season. With defensive end Damon Harrison approaching free agency and Ryan Fitzpatrick as well, the Jets only have around $6.7 million in available cap space, so bringing both back may seem problematic.
The best choice for the Jets would be to resign Fitzpatrick on another one-year deal and see where it goes from there. The Jets year after year are trying to find a Quarterback and with the lack of talent at the position in the NFL, and although the Jets may have to lose Harrison, Fitzpatrick is not replacement at the moment.
Being is that Fitzpatrick is well liked in the locker room and beloved the other teammates, the Jets front office has to get a deal done as soon as possible.
