In what seems like the most obvious news of the day, Ryan Coogler has signed on to write and direct the Black Panther sequel. Coogler was the writer and director of the first installment of the story of the Wakandan King and with its worldwide box office success, there was really no doubt that Coogler would return to continue what he started.
Black Panther released in February of this year and has already grossed over $1.3 Billion, making it one of the highest grossing movies in cinematic history. Coogler’s vision for the characters in Wakanda and for King T’Challa aka Black Panther was a key element to the movie’s success.
Although Coogler had once stated that he wanted to work on other projects, continuing with the Black Panther franchise will allow for a continuity in the story to be maintained. It’s the main reason why the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has (or had) been so successful because James Gunn’s vision was seen throughout all 3 installments.
The question remains how the story will continue from where it was left off. The events that happened in Black Panther were just before the tragedy happened in Infinity Wars and with T’Challa being one of many superheroes ‘snapped’ by Thanos, you have to wonder… where does the story go from here?
Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman and cast will have a long time to consider what they will bring to the fold for the sequel, in hopes of helping it live up to the hype of the first one. Black Panther surpassed all expectations people had of it and the bar will be set incredibly high for Coogler and company.
There is no release date or information on the sequel as of yet.
