Earlier today Head Coach Rick Adelman announced his retirement from head coaching. He’s decided to take a role in the Timberwolves front office. Now there are rumors floating around that Minnesota is hiring a head coach who will help persuade Kevin Love to re-sign with the team. A rumored candidate for the position is Florida Gators Head Coach Billy Donovan. In 2007 after Florida’s back to back championships, Donovan was set to leave The Gators for The Orlando Magic. Just days after coming to an agreement Donovan had second thoughts and told Orlando’s front office that he was not going to take the job. Orlando then granted Donovan release from his contract with an agreement that Donovan could not coach in The NBA for at least five years. Orlando then hired Stan Van Gundy who led The Orlando Magic to a finals appearance.
Donovan has a 451-169 record in the college ranks, and may be a head coaching candidate who can help keep Kevin Love in Minnesota. Love will be a free agent in 2015. Other candidates for the coaching vacancy in Minnesota include Michigan State’s Head Coach Tom Izzo, former NBA player Fred Hoiberg, and former Miami Heat and Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. If Donovan or Izzo were to leave for The NBA it could turn into a major story due to their success in college. I think Donovan is the most interesting candidate. If Minnesota does feel that Donovan is their guy, they better hope cold feet doesn’t get the best of him again.
