In 2012, the Chicago Bulls selected Marquis Teague with the 29th overall pick, leaving Draymond Green to get drafted by the Golden State Warriors 35th overall. Hurts doesn’t it? It truly stings to hear stuff like that, which players certain teams missed out on.
According to Zach Lowe of Grantland, Tom Thibodeau decided to go for Marquis Teague instead, while head assistant coach wanted to go for Green:
Even the loudest Green boosters didn’t expect this. That group includes Adams, who pushed the Bulls to draft Green in 2012 when he worked as Tom Thibodeau’s lead assistant. “As a coaching staff, we were very disappointed we didn’t get him,” Adams says. “He is definitely a Chicago kind of guy. This is no reflection on Kevin Love, but every team wants a Draymond Green. He has internalized the parts of the game that are the winning parts: the hustle, the grit, the defense, making the right play at the right time. I love that guy. I’m glad he’s on our team.”
Personally I don’t think Draymond would have got the light of day in Chicago, because they are very talented in the front court with Joakim Noah, Loul Deng, a young Taj Gibson. Which means Green would get no minutes. People are just trying to bother Thibodeau, the front office and him did not see eye to eye, and now he is looking for another job. Let the man live. Ron Adams, one of Thibodeau’s top assistants in Chicago was fired by the Bulls, which was a major reason why Thibodeau came to his breaking point with the franchise.
With Draymond, they probably wouldn’t need to sign Paul Gasol, which could have saved them money and helped them land pieces that can get them over the hump in the Eastern Conference. Now the Bulls are kind of at square one again. With a new young head coach and a hurt Chicago Bulls club, the Bulls need some rejuvenation, quick.
Ron Adams on the other hand, has the pleasure of having Draymond Green on his team with Golden State in the NBA Finals.
