For many years. Contracts and free agency have been a pillar of American sports.
Everytime star NFL, NBA and MLB players declare free agency. Everyone speculates. “Where are they going? Where’s the best fit?”. I love it. Especially when my team is in the mix.
Recently. Sports and the entertainment industry has combined. Rap star Jay-Z decided to expand his horizons and create RocNation Sports. With his name on the signing page. Many sports stars ditched their agents and flocked to RocNation. Robinson Cano, Kevin Durant, Victor Cruz, Skylar Diggins to name a few.
Since the birth of RocNation Sports. The media began to cover the agencies behind the deals. CAA and IMG being the two kingpins of the Sports Agency world.
If you didn’t know. RocNation was actually in a partnership with CAA. A two-year partnership. Well according to the New York Post, those two years have passed and the two agencies are parting ways.
“Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports have recently concluded their two-year partnership. Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports are two of the premier agencies and they will continue their high levels of client service to the world’s top athletes,” according to a statement.
“Going forward, they will each focus their efforts on their own business opportunities and clientele.”
Under the partnership, Roc Nation Sports — a division of Roc Nation — took the lead in getting marketing and sponsorship deals, while TPG-owned CAA handled the athletes’ player contracts.
You could say that CAA helped RocNation ride a bike without stabilisers and now RocNation are riding till the wheels fall off.
RocNation now has a clientele, they definitely have the marketing tools. Sky’s the limit.
