Free agent forward Richard Jefferson has reportedly lost his father, 65, in a drive-by shooting in Compton according to TMZ.
Law enforcement officials involved tell TMZ that Richard Jefferson Sr. was in a residential area near a liquor store when a vehicle came up and opened fire. TMZ also says that Jefferson Sr. was not alone, nor is it clear if he was the target of the shooting. He was reportedly shot multiple times in the torso and pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after. The Los Angeles Sherrif’s Department is working on the case and investigating.
TMZ reached out to Jefferson’s camp for a comment, but has not heard back.
Jefferson the NBA player is currently a free agent after spending last season with the Denver Nuggets. The 38-year-old has spent 17 seasons in the NBA, winning a championship with Cleveland in 2016. He worked the sidelines for the first time last season following the Nuggets missing the playoffs in the Western Conference.
Certainly our sympathies are with Jefferson and his family at this time.
