Last week The Good Place saw Tahani and Eleanor make amends with long-estranged (or assumed dead) family members. Tahani with her sister and Eleanor with her mother. Eleanor also learned from Michael that she and Chidi had fallen in love at one point in the afterlife. This week saw Eleanor learn even more as Michael helps her remember things from the afterlife.
Looking for the least busy place they can, Eleanor and Michael end up at a library. Wanting to remember falling in love with Chidi, Eleanor asks Michael to help her remember the afterlife. Michael has a device for that and after a test run that goes less than smoothly, he succeeds and Eleanor is thrown into a memory of her and Chidi in The Good Place.
Michael invites the residents to a pick-a-pet event where they can choose an animal soul mate. Eleanor chooses a lizard in a cowboy hat but Chidi can’t decide and ends up with an Owl. Eleanor tries to help Chidi choose a new pet but Michael says no and reveals that they will turn into their animals later so Chidi will be able to fly.
However, the pair doesn’t return later as Eleanor loses her lizard. Chidi decides to skip the event to help her. While looking, Eleanor wonders why he isn’t there flying around. He tells her he’d rather be there with her and they kiss. In the following scenes, we see the two cuddled on their couch, as well as the infamous ‘I love you’ moment when they visit Mindy St. Clair.
Michael ends the flashback here and pulls Eleanor back to reality. He was still a true demon back then and the next scenes don’t paint him in the best light. She convinces him to show her, however, and she is sent back into her memory. Michael is about to reboot the neighborhood and Eleanor tells Chidi that they’re soulmates. Michael laughs and tells them he made it up before rebooting them.
Eleanor comes back to reality again and decides because Michael was manipulating her she can’t fall in love. She then throws herself into the moral theory of determinism; the idea that everything is pre-determined and we have no free will. Michael tries multiple times to snap her out of it but nothing in is working as she is spiraling. Eventually, he gets through to her and calls her out for going back to her old ways instead of being vulnerable.
Michael goes to pick up the other humans from the airport and Eleanor admits that he’s right. Then, the Soul Squad decides they should find the perfect model human for getting into a Good Place. Michael decides that they should start their search in rural Canada and the group hurries off. Elsewhere, demons Shawn, Vicki, and Val find their way to Earth, which definitely doesn’t bode well for the humans.
