Last week on The Good Place we saw the ‘Soul Squad’ save their first soul, one of Jason’s old friends from Florida. We also saw Jason reconcile with his estranged father, even if he didn’t get to save his soul, at least Jason finally has a father again. That theme continued this week as Eleanor travels to America to confront her mother, who she had assumed to be dead.
Michael accompanies Eleanor to Nevada where they find her mother, now going by Donna. Donna is living with her new boyfriend Dave and his daughter Patricia. She seems happy and well-adjusted compared to the woman Eleanor remembers but Eleanor doesn’t believe it for a second. Michael tries to convince her otherwise to no avail as he and Dave strike up an immediate friendship.
She turns the house upside down searching for a wad of cash she thinks Donna is keeping hidden. This culminates in Eleanor threatening to cut open Patricia’s stuffed animals and ultimately Eleanor realizes why she is so upset. She wishes she had the Donna that Patricia does and even though she does find a roll of cash Donna is keeping, Eleanor admits that her mother seems happy in her new life.
The two reconcile but Eleanor confides in Michael that she still feels Donna’s impact, specifically citing the fact that she’s never told a man outside her family that she loves him. Michael then reveals that had, in fact, told Chidi that she loves him back in the Good/Bad place.
Meanwhile, in Budapest, the ‘Soul Squad’ continues its mission as Tahani seeks to save her sister Kamilah. The squad travels to Kamilah’s newest art exhibit and Tahani’s first attempt to get through to her sister are met with disdain. This, along with the fact that everyone including Chidi has fallen for Kamilah’s overly nice act, causes Tahani to lose it and put a fireman’s ax through an omelet bar.
The ensuing time spent in handcuffs helps Tahani realize that her and Kamilah’s feud stems from the way their parents always made them compete. With this, she is finally able to break through to Kamilah upon realizing that all her art pieces feature a pair, the two sisters. Kamilah opens up to Tahani and credits her as a co-creator of her art exhibit.
The humans continue to show growth in their new mission but they are still doomed to the Bad Place. I’d expect them to find a loophole in the system by the end of the season but wouldn’t be disappointed if they never find a way to The Good Place. Either way, this episode continues the run of strong episodes this season, a trend that will hopefully continue as the season progresses.
The Good Place airs Thursday nights on NBC
