Last week’s episode ended with the bombshell return of Trevor. He’s posing as part of Chidi and Simone’s study to get closer to our heroes. The gang last dealt with him in season 2 when he fought to get them in the real Bad Place. However, this time the humans are unaware of Trevor’s presence. They also have no knowledge of the afterlife, which complicates Michael and Janet’s attempts to protect them.
Michael disguises himself like a noir film character and goes to Earth to confront Trevor. Trevor mocks him reveals his plans to separate the group. He tells Trevor he won’t succeed but it seems Eleanor is already disconnecting from the group. She is frustrated because she wants to continue her one-on-one work with Chidi but he is too busy with the new study.
Trevor’s first step in his plan is then realized as he takes the group to an over the top themed bar. The Cowboy Skyscraper Buffet combines all the gross American stereotypes in this over the top, hilarious sequence. Trevor is aggressively friendly, which automatically irritates Eleanor, and seems to be making progress until Janet appears as their waiter. However, after realizing that she’s lost her powers on Earth, Janet breaks down and becomes essentially useless.
Trevor continues by convincing Chidi that he could harm the study by spending time with the subjects. So, obviously, Chidi runs away to avoid hurting the study. Trevor also gets Tahani ridiculously drunk so she will get friendly with Jason, which she does. He believes she will be so embarrassed she’ll leave the group. After his success at the bar, Trevor taunts Michael and Janet at how easy his job has been.
However, the next day when the group meets its obvious that his job may not be so easy. Tahani was embarrassed but claims Jason was a perfect gentleman so chooses to continue the study. Eleanor originally skips class, however, Chidi arrives and apologizes. He pleads with her “as a friend” and she decides to rejoin the group.
However, in the end, Michael and Janet’s chance to gloat is cut short as the Doorman comes to take them all back to Judge Gen. Gen abruptly ends the Trevor story by flinging him into the void before she scolds Michael and Janet. She then tries to force Michael and Janet into ‘retirement’ before Janet’s powers kick back in. Gen is distracted and the two make their escape with the help of the Doorman, who has warmed up to Michael after all their interactions. This introduces a new and interesting dynamic as Michael and Janet will now be forced to help the humans without their powers.
