How do you top one of the most-watched seasons of television in recent memory? Well, Squid Game Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is about to find out. Three years after the first season emerged as one of the most popular series of the 21st century, Netflix and Dong-hyuk have released the show’s second season. While it may be tough to top the show’s first season, Dong-hyuk is confident that he can.
“Squid Game Season 2 is crazy,” Hwang Dong-hyuk said.
“The world is crazy now. And this [season] is crazy because it’s based on the world as we live in now.”
Less than 24 hours after the second season’s initial release, millions of viewers have tuned into to see how “crazy” the show will get during its second chapter. Let’s see what viewers and critics are saying thus far.
The Basics
Where To Watch: Netflix (From $6.99 Per Month)
Starring: Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, Yim Si-wan
Synopsis: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”
Critics’ Chatter
“Deeply disturbing, ultraviolent and offering new insights, Squid Game Season 2 is a worthy follow-up expanding on the ominous themes of its predecessor.”

“If season 1 of the masterful Korean thriller Squid Game introduced audiences to the capitalist hellscape that made its macabre elementary school field day for deeply indebted adults possible, season 2 is seemingly meant to parse through the complexities of that cutthroat terrain.”
—Shannon Miller, IGN | Read The Full Review Here
“For a series credited with starting an international TV revolution, Squid Game Season 2 sure feels like the standard sequel to a Hollywood blockbuster. The story mirrors the original, following a fresh batch of desperate have-nots competing in elementary school games with a sizable fortune for the winners and pitiless execution for the losers. Season 2 also stars the same lead character — or characters, really, as Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) guides the A-plot inside the game, and Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) drives the B-plot behind the scenes. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is also back, writing and directing every episode, and the already-striking production is infused with the bigger, bolder style that tends to come with extra resources.”
