New year, new franchise sequel.
‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ is the first big wide release of 2014. Catering to the franchises biggest audience, the Latino spinoff follows a group of teens in Oxnard, California as they investigate a murder scene where all hell breaks loose. Literally.
The film is more of a ‘cousin’ to the ‘Paranormal’ franchise as over explains the background of the demon that has plagued Katie and her family.
‘The Marked Ones’ is a standard “found footage film” full of standard gotcha moments and gags, but director Christopher Landon tries to focus more on the horror and mystery surrounding the demons which makes it more terrifying. There is a lot more action that happens throughout the movie than its relatives as well which will definitely keep you entertained.
The movie is also more comical than the others with a Nana that can kill a tequila shots better than I can and one liners that will have you laughing out loud. It does get rather unbelievable at times though as the characters are so focused on holding a camera while they fight for their lives. But thank god they did as it delivers an ending that not even the biggest fan could see coming.
‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ is a step above the more recent films in the franchise. It will be enough to tide fans over until ‘Paranormal Activity 5’ hits theaters later this year.

I am giving this a 10 because there are people who knowingly hate this series, who are giving it a low rating just to be vindictive.
This is a good movie. The acting was good, the setting was different, and it tied in every well with the rest of the series. It answered some questions and opens up options to end the franchise in a neat way.
I don’t know what everyone is complaining about – if you’ve seen one movie, then you know by now what to expect. The PA franchise isn’t Oscar material, but that’s not why people watch them. I’ve also seen complaints that the movies “don’t scare” the viewer, but I watch them because they are fun and entertaining, not because I want to be scared. Think: Evil Dead.
So I don’t want to give anything away – but if you’re a fan, you will like this one. It’s better than PA4 and explains a lot.
