What do you get when you mix sci-fi, comedy, drama and a love story? You get the best movie of the year. And its only January.
Spike Jonze’s ‘Her’ is a brilliant 21st century film that examines the ups and downs of relationships and emotions.
The film follows a depressed writer (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his highly advanced computer operating system voiced by Scarlett Johansson. The boundaries of the unusual relationship are tested both physically and emotionally.
Phoenix gives an excellent performance giving just the right amount of nerdy and vulnerability. Johansson also knocks it out of the park with just her voice as she is never seen on screen.
Kristen Wiig also makes a brief cameo in a telephone scene at the beginning of the movie that will have you rolling.
The film has a poetic element to it with beautiful flashbacks and stunning cinematography. Wardrobe is also on point. If you don’t want to own a pair of high waisted pants after this movie then you are severely mistaken. Perhaps the only thing more heartbreaking than the film is the fact that the soundtrack has yet to be released. The music for ‘Her’ drifts you from scene to scene and will either have you smiling or crying.
Keep an eye out for ‘Her’ in the coming months as the film is sure to attract a few Oscar noms.
