It is already obvious that ‘Divergent’ is set up to be the next young adult blockbuster smash, but the question is “Is it good?”
Sort of.
The film takes place in apocalyptic Chicago where people are divided up into factions based on personality traits. When Beatrice Prior doesn’t fit into any of those categories, she is listed as Divergent and has to hide it from everybody in fear of being killed. When she uncovers a plot to kill off all Divergents she must fight to save her people.
The beginning of the movie feels completely rushed and leaves some questions lingering as to what is going on. Of course, if you have read the book you are at an advantage. As it progresses, the film feels dragged out and lingers on unnecessary scenes.
However, there are redeeming qualities towards the end when the film shifts gears. It picks up the pace and provides audiences with more action.
For an $80 million budget, the graphics look relatively cheap especially the scene involving a zip line.
Shailene Woodley is a talented actress and pushes her diversity further as a kick ass heroine. She brings just the right amount of insecurity and vulnerability to the character. She also has great chemistry with hunk Theo James which will definetly have girls fan-girling all over the place.
Fans of the book will be pleased with the outcome of ‘Divergent’ and it may even rope in some new people. Although it does have its flaws, it is a good movie that will have you return for the sequel.
