Move over Betty White. Steve Rogers is officially the most badass 95-year-old ever.
‘Captain America’: The Winter Soldier’ is a rarity. It’s a sequel that is better than the original and easily Marvel’s best offering to date. The film is undeniably witty, complex, and stuffed with enough action to keep you entertained for its 135 minute run.
The film follows Steve Rogers as he tries to to adjust to life in the modern world. When a Soviet assassin known as The Winter Soldier appears and threatens S.H.I.E.L.D., Rogers must fight to save the world population from being killed off. The less you know about the plot, the better your enjoyment will be.
Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson return to their respected roles and deliver excellent performances. Evans’ portrayal of a Captain who has lost everything is spot on and brings vulnerability to the character that you don’t normally see.
New comer Anthony Mackie plays Sam Wilson aka Falcon holds his own and is a nice addition to the team. Each character gets equal time to show their stuff while developing their back story for possible future films. It also nods to characters from the films predecessor that Marvel fans will enjoy.
The film is not short on action. The fight scenes are choreographed to perfection as Captain makes the most of his shield. A car chase involving Nick Fury and a JARVIS-esq car is full of explosions, bullets and crashes that is sure to entertain. These scenes also rely on practical effects rather than green screen which really make them stand out.
Shaky cam is in play here and it does ruins a few of the fight scenes. So much action is happening on the screen while the camera is moving that it becomes a huge blur.
Don’t forget to stick around for TWO extra scenes that set up ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and hints at what we might expect in ‘Captain America 3’.
‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ stands on its own as a solid film. Its the perfect summer blockbuster a couple months early.
