The Washington Wizards have reportedly fired head coach Randy Wittman, according to multiple reports. The reports come after a 109-98 victory against the Atlanta Hawks in the team’s final game of the season.
The Wizards had a disappointing season after high expectations fell flat. Washington missed the playoffs, finishing the year at 41-41. Injuries played a major role, but Wittman’s tactically deficient coaching had been under criticism for some time and the disappointing season became an ideal time for management to move on.
According to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski, two names have emerged as favorites for the job.
One is former Suns head coach Jeff Hornacek. This, however, seems unlikely, unless the Wizards are willing to move on from recently acquired forward Markieff Morris. Morris and Hornacek’s feuding was very visible as the former’s disputes with the Suns organization as a whole bled into the games.
The other name is former Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. This seems like a much more likely option. The Wizards will continue to attempt to sign Kevin Durant in the offseason and the Thunder star has a great relationship with his former coach. Hiring Brooks could give them a slightly higher chance of signing the superstar to take them to another level.
