Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller has been absent from the team’s offseason programs so far this year. He has been hoping to find a long-term deal before July 15, the deadline that a franchise tagged player can sign a contract. However, both sides are still very far away on agreeing to a deal. Miller expressed his frustrations on an Instagram post this afternoon.
It appears that he clearly wants to sign a long-term contract and get back with the team. However, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Fletcher Cox signed a six-year, $103 million contract with $63 million in guarantees just two days ago. It’s clear that Miller believes that he is worth even more than this lucrative contract. To be fair, he has the right to believe so. He has been one of the NFL’s premier defenders for the past six years, and just racked up a Super Bowl MVP award. Losing him would be a devastating blow to the Broncos’ roster.
Having lost key defenders Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan in free agency, Denver’s defense won’t be as dominant as they were last year. Not having their best player for the 2016 season would be absolutely crushing for them. Sure, they also have DeMarcus Ware and Shane Ray at the edge rusher position, but neither of them have the talent that Miller has. This statement may put Denver in panic mode to get a deal done.
Von Miller is definitely worth a big-time contract. Question is, will Denver fork one over to him?
