Kevin Durant’s impending free agency is one of the largest storylines of this NBA season. The Oklahoma City Thunder forward is the prized free agent of the summer. As such, every team will at least consider ways of adding him to their respective rosters – or at least be rumored to do so. It has already happened with the likes of the Warriors and Lakers, and most recently with the Boston Celtics.
The newest rumor has rival executives believing that even the San Antonio Spurs will attempt to join the sweepstakes, despite not having much cap space compared to the rest of the league.
The following from Chris Mannix of The Vertical:
Still, so much remains unknown. The lure of playing with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson has to be appealing, but would Durant really jump to a possible two-time champion, to a team that will never be his? San Antonio has rebuilt its dynasty, but rival executives believe the Spurs will explore ways of adding Durant to the mix, and the franchise’s culture makes it intriguing.
Clearly, the lure of adding a player of Durant’s caliber is too strong even for the traditionally conservative Spurs. If San Antonio is able to clear up the room needed to sign KD to a max contract, it could conceivably see itself starting the deadliest wing duo in the league with Kawhi Leonard pairing up with the Thunder superstar.
That said, all rumors about Durant should be taken with heaps of salt. He has repeatedly shown no insight into his thought process. Additionally, it is already clear that thirty teams in the NBA would love to have a superstar like Durant on their team.
Nevertheless, it is interesting to read that the Spurs may actively attempt to sign Durant. And if rumors about KD considering going to Warriors for the chance to win are true, then there may be something to say about Durant’s interest in joining the Spurs as well.
As always, this rumor will be something to keep an eye as we get closer and closer to what should be a crazy free agency period.
