Reports are coming out claiming that the NBA salary cap will increase to $105 million dollars in the 2017-2018 season, which is a more than a $30 million increase from it’s current cap.
According to Zach Lowe of Grantland:
“The cap could jump from $90 million in 2016-17 to as much as $105 million the year after, per league sources”
Another source, Brian Windhorst of ESPN, also reported:
“NBA teams using internal data are projecting the salary cap to jump to between $88 million and $92 million per team, sources told ESPN”
If these numbers are true, or even accurate estimates, a lock-out will happen. It’s pure economics. You can not suddenly increase the salary cap, when the plan is to smoothly integrate the TV deal money. Might as well enjoy basketball now, because in 2017, trouble could be on it’s way.
