The Milwaukee Bucks are finalizing a three year extension worth $15 million for head coach Jason Kidd, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of the Vertical. With one year left on his current deal, the extension will keep Kidd under contract until 2020.
The extension was rumored to be coming since late May.
Kidd has coached the Bucks for the past two seasons to varying degrees of success. His first season in Milwaukee included leading the team who previously had the worst record in the league to a postseason berth. His second season was not quite as successful, as the Bucks were disappointing all year and missed out on the playoffs.
In his two seasons in Milwaukee, Kidd has accumulated a 74-90 record. This follows on year with the Brooklyn Nets in which the team had a record of 44-38.
This of course comes after many rumors about Kidd wanting to stage a coup of sorts in the Bucks’ management. There has been much speculation about the coach ultimately wanting to position himself as the general manager or president of the team. This speculation has been denied by Kidd, who has written about his relationship with the Milwaukee front office.
The Bucks seem happy enough about their head coach after two seasons on the sidelines and confident enough about his goals to sign him long-term.
Of course, ultimately the length of the deal does not matter. With no salary cap for coaching salaries, teams are more than content to walk away from their coaches regardless of the amount of money and years left on their deals. Nevertheless, this does show a vote of confidence from Bucks’ management to Jason Kidd and a desire to keep him in Milwaukee for some time.
