The Charlotte Hornets signing Lance Stephenson in free agency was supposed to be an upgrade for Charlotte in an area they were sorely lacking in wing scoring. Stephenson proved his ability to be an offensive spark in his time with the Indiana Pacers.
But Charlotte has looked like anything but an improved team so far this season. As a result, Lance was officially put on the trading block, but then reportedly pulled right back off. Well according to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, Stephenson has simply clashed with his Hornets teammates, making him more likely to be eventually traded by Charlotte:
According to league sources, Stephenson has clashed with teammates, and coach Steve Clifford has placed the onus of Stephenson’s adjustment on the team’s veteran players, hoping they could police themselves and convince Stephenson to become more of a team player. Stephenson may become a more attractive piece near the Feb. 19 trade deadline, but the Hornets would want value in return.
The latest rumor was that a return to the Pacers might be in the works for Stephenson. The Hornets are currently 8-19, and this latest report is more about the chemistry in the locker room than Lance’s immediate struggles on the floor.
Any bidder for Lance Stephenson knows what they’re getting into, especially now. Waiting out on proposing deals with Stephenson as the centerpiece is the best option just in case he does pick up his play and increase his trade value. There are certainly teams that would be interested in dealing for Lance as we approach the trade deadline, particularly if they’re looking for an an offensive spark. Still, these chemistry issues will only only be a hindrance to his value.
