Report: LaMarcus Aldridge Possibly Linked To Spurs In Free Agency
LaMarcus Aldridge will be one of the coveted targets as an unrestricted free agent this summer. His current situation with the Portland Trail Blazers is a great one, thus making it hard to believe that he’ll opt to sign elsewhere.
But then there’s this from Grantland’s Zach Lowe:
This could be random, but nearly a half-dozen executives from different teams mentioned the possibility of the Spurs luring LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency with a max contract.
Let me be clear, my beloved Portland maniacs: I do not see this happening. Repeat: I do not see this happening. …
San Antonio waited on a Kawhi Leonard extension precisely to hoard max cap space this summer in case both Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili retire. Dallas could have max-level space, though it’d have to renounce several very good free agents to get it. Houston would need to cut some salary, but it also has the goods to put together a solid sign-and-trade offer if Aldridge makes it known he’d prefer to go there.
This is probably much ado about very little.
This information came from executives at the D-League showcase in California.
Lowe dropped in his two cents on this rumor. He doesn’t see Aldridge leaving for San Antonio. But he makes important reference to the Spurs’ cap space and potential phase for rebuilding this summer. It’s been reported that Marc Gasol will be in the Spurs’ sights as a free agent this summer. Preparing to target players like Aldridge and Gasol suggest that Tim Duncan’s retirement is expected.
Even with the opportunity to play in his home state, whether for Dallas or San Antonio, LaMarcus Aldridge seems set on remaining the cornerstone of the Blazers franchise.
