Kevin Durant’s free agency is the biggest NBA headline outside of the playoffs. The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar will enter unrestricted free agency for the first time and all thirty teams will want to court the forward. There will be many rumors until Durant’s decision is finally known, with some holding more legitimacy than others.
One such rumor involves a somewhat unusual party in the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are not traditionally involved in the free agency rumor mill, but as they showed last summer, they can get down and dirty when they think they have found the right type of player.
According to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, this particular rumor does have some legitimacy, gaining steam akin to the sudden storm before San Antonio signed LaMarcus Aldridge during the last offseason:
The Spurs buzz is ascendant in a way that is eerily similar to what happened last January at the D-League Showcase, when a half-dozen unconnected team executives warned me over the span of a few days that LaMarcus Aldridge would bolt from Portland for San Antonio. Who knows.
One should take into consideration that Lowe is not saying that Durant is as good as gone to San Antonio, by any means. However, the comparison to Aldridge’s free agency are very interesting. If the rumor is indeed true, it would signify another star player falling in love with the potential of playing for the best coach in the league and with one of the greatest organizations in the league. It is in no way a completely unlikely proposition.
No one really knows what Durant will do in free agency and in all likelihood, neither does he. But there are several teams that will court the Thunder star and out of that group, a few will get legitimate consideration by Durant. At this point, it seems that the Spurs are in that exclusive club.
