Report: Andre Drummond To Be Cut From Team USA
As reported by Perry A. Farrell of Detroit Free Press Sports, Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond is likely to be cut from Team USA when the final 12-man roster is announced before the Basketball World Cup kicks off in Spain on August 30. Drummond is currently the 15th man on Team USA’s roster and did not see the floor at all during Team USA’s 95-78 victory against Brazil on Saturday night.
Mason Plumlee, initially reported to be potentially making the team over DeMarcus Cousins, is apparently a better fit than Drummond for Team USA. Plumlee shot 3-for-3 from the field in 15 minutes of action against Brazil. Drummond just recently expressed that he didn’t expect to go home, but that might be exactly the case, as the final two roster spots appear to be going to Chandler Parsons and Kyle Korver for outside shooting purposes.
Team USA will have another open scrimmage tonight, a chance for the 6-foot-10 Drummond to prove his worth. Despite Cousins’ injury, it seems as if Team USA will stick with Boogie as their lone center and stay more downsized for faster, more versatile and agile line ups. Drummond’s size and girth would come in handy against formidable interiors like Spain, but Mike Krzyzewski and his staff aren’t sending optimistic signs about his long term stay with Team USA for the World Cup.
