U.S. Representative George Santos of New York will not be on Capitol Hill this morning. Instead, he finds himself in the custody of authorities in Long Island after being hit with 13 federal charges, including fraud and money laundering. The congressman is reportedly being held at the federal courthouse on Long Island and will be arraigned at 1 p.m. EST.
Santos nor his staff members have offered a comment regarding the federal charges levied against the New York lawmaker. When asked about the matter, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy did not go in depth about his feelings.
“I’ll look at the charges,” he said.
In contrast, Santos’ Democratic colleagues have been more emphatic regarding their feelings about him and his recent indictment. Not only has Santos drawn public criticism for his recent legal troubles, but he’s also been called out for “embellishing” his resume.
“Close to 80% of people polled think he should not be in office,” Rep. Anthony D’Esposito said.
“It’s been an absolute distraction at a time when we should be rolling up our sleeves and getting to work.”
