The Boston Red Sox may have drafted themselves a future All-Star center-fielder. Arkansas’ Andrew Benintendi is the 2015 Golden Spikes award winner, an award which crowns the top amateur baseball player in the United States. Benintendi beat out Alex Bregman of LSU, right-handed pitcher Carson Fulmer of Vanderbilt and shortstop Dansby Swanson of Vanderbilt. The Red Sox must be excited for there young draftee as each of the four players previously mentioned were taken in the top ten of this year MLB Draft.
This award only adds to the young outfielders trophy collection as he already was crowned the Dick Howser Trophy (awarded to the best player in college baseball), and was named Baseball America’s College Player of the Year. Benintendi joins some elite company as Kris Bryant, Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg, Buster Posey, David Price, Tim Lincecum, Alex Gordon, Jered Weaver and Jason Varitek are some of the previous winners of the prestigious award. After leading the SEC in home runs (20), batting average (.378), slugging percentage, and on base percentage the 20 year old outfielder was deserving of the award.
