
Over the last five years, RAY BLK has gone from your average college student to the 2017 recipient of BBC’s “Sound of the Year” award. In 2015 and 2016, the Nigerian native of London dropped two projects called Durt and Havisham. Since then, the London singer has found herself working with Maleek Berry, Gorillaz and Wyclef Jean. After taking a two year break from releasing solo projects, the Nigerian artist is back with a new eight track solo project called Empress.
RAY’s newest endeavor is led by the title track and video, “Empress”, which debuted in early September. When asked about the album’s direction, she said, “When I started making this project, I was just in a space where I reached a peak of self-acceptance and self-love.” She later added, “There’s a lot pulling women down and making them feel not good enough. And I just wanted to uplift people.”
The BLK is Ray’s musical stage name stands for building, living and knowing. Given the inspiration and sound of her new project, it’s safe to say that she is living up to her name.
