Ray Allen is taking his talents to South Beach. The soon-to-be 37-year old has committed to joining the defending champion, spurning an offer from the Celtics who offered Allen a two-year deal at double the salary for $12 million plus a no-trade clause. It’s been reported that Allen was still bitter at being shopped around last February, and coupled with his rocky relationship with Rajon Rondo, was enough for the veteran to accept less money to become a sixth man in Miami.
The Heat’s deal is the mid-level exception that starts at $3.09 million and could be worth a maximum of $9.5 million over three seasons.
Finals MVP LeBron James was also quick to celebrate the news, he tweeted, “#HeatNation please welcome our newest teammate Ray Allen #Wow #JesusShuttlesworth”
