The Toronto Raptors made the decision to fire head coach Dwane Casey after the team’s lackluster exit from the NBA Playoffs. The choice to let go of the most successful coach in Raptors history was clearly not an easy one. In fact, it was one of the hardest decisions Raptors President Masai Ujiri has ever had to make.

Including playoffs, Casey won 371 games with the Raptors and is a big reason the franchise has turned into a consistently good team. Dwane Casey won Coach of the Year as voted by his peers, a testament to the job he did this year. Masai Ujiri calling this decision the hardest one of his life is another testament to what Casey did not only this past season but since he was hired in 2011.
The last coach to be fired after winning coach of the year was George Karl with the Denver Nuggets. Ironically enough, Masai Ujiri was part of that franchise as well. Ujiri left Denver for Toronto a week prior to the Nuggets firing of Karl.
