Right now, it seems that the entires Washington Wizards fan base is asking for Randy Wittman to be ousted from his head coaching position. Yes the Wizards have been slumping, but there is just no way that this will actually happen.
First of all, the Wizards should have never hired Randy Wittman. What did they ever see in him? He has a career winning percentage of .389 as a head coach in the NBA.
Only 8 coaches have a worse career percentage than Wittman does, which puts his credentials into question. When he was hired in 2012, the franchise was still in flux, looking for the answer to their problems. Wittman was not the answer, but made the team work together well enough to make a little playoff run.
On June 3rd 2014, Wittman signed a 3 year contract extension worth $9 million. He was awarded the contract after the 2013-2014 playoffs where he led all the way to game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, where the Wizards lost to the Pacers.
It’s pretty obvious that Wittman was not the one who led them that far, but he was at the helm at the same time this success occurred. You do have to give him some credit for their playoff run. They easily handled the Bulls, and were so close to sending the heavily favored Pacers into game 7.
The bottom line is, Randy Wittman will still be the head coach of the Washington Wizards at the end of next season. If they do not make the Eastern Conference semifinals one of the next two years, I could see him potentially being let go after the 2015-2016 season, but that is the only way.
When contemplating looking at another option at head coach, the Wizards definitely see a lack of head coaches worth their time. The current staff may not be ideal, but there really is not an option out there better than what the Wizards already have.
Wizards fans need to stop asking for Wittman’s ousting because it is just a straight up waste of their time. Sadly for all Wizards fans alike, Wittman will still be in DC, and there is not much that can be done about it.
