Trumain Johnson will become the highest paid cornerback in football in 2017. He will earn a $16 million salary via getting hit with the franchise tag for the 2nd year in a row. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news.
With today’s franchise tag, Rams CB Trumaine Johnson is now scheduled to be NFL’s highest-paid CB at $16 million.

Johnson would have earned $14.297 million if this was the first time he was being franchise tagged. At this point, there is no urgency for him to work out a long-term deal as his production does not mirror becoming the highest paid corner in the league. A year ago the Rams decided to franchise tag Johnson over Janoris Jenkins who signed with the Giants. That decision is coming back to haunt them.
In 2016, Johnson he recorded just 1 interception in 14 games. He picked off 7 passes in 2015 which warranted him the franchise tag the first time.
