On July 22, 2025, Rakim confirmed the August 29th release of his latest album, The Re-Up. The Hip-Hop legend laid the groundwork for the project by delivering a new single called “Not To Be Defined” featuring Lazarus.
Four decades into his career, Rakim has nothing left to prove, but is working harder than ever before. In 2024, he returned to release G.O.D.’s Network: Reb7rth, his first full-length project in 15 years. Less than two years later, he’s delivering a new single and preparing another album. Not to mention, he recently received the George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music and Dance in America from Johns Hopkins University. In addition, he delivered the commencement address at the 2025 Peabody Conservatory graduation ceremony.
“Just a teenager when he launched his career, Rakim has amassed decades of success as a performing artist, entertainer, and cultural icon,” Peabody Dean Fred Bronstein said. “As our graduating student artists begin to create their paths forward, they will no doubt find inspiration in the words and life story of this truly foundational figure in Hip-Hop.”
The foundational figure will return with more verses and hooks in late August. Until then, check out Rakim’s new single with Lazarus below.
