The New England Patriots have begun to build their season by trading for Oakland Raiders speedster Cordarrelle Patterson.
While Pardon My Take had reported the news first, NFL Network Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero had both reported details of this trade. The Patriots will apparently swap their fifth-round pick with the Raiders sixth-rounder pending a physical of the player by team doctors.
Cordarrelle Patterson is a very speedy WR who is a well rounded offensive player and will almost certainly find a spot in Bill Belichick’s offense. He is most known for his speed and special teams plays, a role he will definitely find himself in with the Pats losing Matthew Slater.
The Raiders had a decent run with Patterson, trading him will save them some cap room and allow them to get a higher draft spot from their sixth. Last season Patterson caught 31 passes for 309 yards as well as ran the ball 13 times for 121 yards and two scores.
The Patriots add to their depth at WR and get a new return man with Lewis and Amendola leaving town this offseason and Edelman returning from injury. The Patriots and Raiders have done business for a WR before back when Randy Moss was sent up to New England. While no one is claiming Patterson will come out like that he could be in line for a nice season if he can find some rhythm in offense while still contributing on special teams.
