Queen of the South has been renewed for a fifth season. According to Variety, the network opted to make the announcement ahead of tonight’s (Thursday, August 29th) season four finale.
An adaptation of Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s book, La Reina Del Sur, tells the story of Teresa Mendoza. After getting into trouble with Mexican drug cartels, Mendoza flees to the U.S. where she is still constantly on the run. She continues working in the underground world though, and season four saw her move her operation to New Orleans. Eyeing a takeover of the East Coast, Mendoza has to deal with skeletons from her past as well as betrayals in her present. The series has been praised by critics since its premiere, though it hasn’t had the runaway mainstream success one would expect.
USA Network is really angling to become one of the big dogs in the cable landscape again. The network had a moment in the mid-2000s with shows such as Burn Notice, Psych, and White Collar. But, has since faded a little with the rise of Netflix and premium cable channels.
That doesn’t mean the channel has stopped putting out great content though. Four critically acclaimed seasons of Queen of the South can attest to that. Then there’s also the hacking thriller, Mr. Robot returning for its final season in October. USA also renewed The Sinner for a third season, which is expected to be the most boundary-pushing outing of the series yet. And, looking ahead, the network has an extremely intriguing series in the pipeline from Mary J. Blige that tells the story of real-life drug queenpin, Thelma Wright.
The season 4 finale of Queen of the South airs tonight, Thursday, August 29th on USA Network.
