Carmelo Anthony may not be on an NBA team right now, but that does not mean he isn’t being courted. The national basketball team of Puerto Rico has extended an offer to Anthony to be on their team, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowksi.
“I’m a big fan of Carmelo not only as a basketball player, but more importantly as one of our Puerto Rican heroes,” Ramos told ESPN. “He and his foundation have done a lot for Puerto Rico. I think along with J.J. Barea, Carmelo could make a huge impact on the team and help lift the spirits of our country.”
Dallas Mavericks point guard J.J. Barea, who is a part of the Puerto Rican national team and has done considerable charitable work for the island, is on board with the idea.
“With his connection to Puerto Rico, his NBA stardom and his experiences, our fans would love it,” Barea said. “We tried a bunch to get him in the past, but of course nobody blamed him for playing for Team USA. But if he ever wants a chance to represent us, it would be awesome to have him.”
While Carmelo Anthony does not have an NBA championship, he does have a very impressive international basketball career resume. Three Olympic gold medals and bronze medal, as well as Team USA’s all-time leading scorer.
Anthony and the Houston Rockets are planning to part ways after just ten games together.
