It’s not often we see Cardi B and Nicki Minaj join forces on something, but today we saw just that. The two superstars joined a long list of musicians who have pledged their support for a new initiative to increase the number of women producers and sound engineers in music.
Launched by The Recording Academy, the Producer and Engineering Inclusion Initiative “asks that at least two women are identified and therefore considered as part of the selection process every time a music producer or engineer is hired.” The Recording Academy’s new initiative “also asks working producers to agree to take issues of gender diversity within music’s technical fields into account when deciding who to mentor and hire for further development.” As reported by The Recording Academy, women currently only make up 2% of music producers and 3% of sound mixers and engineers.
Along with Cardi B and Nicki Minaj, Chance The Rapper, Fat Joe, Alicia Keys, Meek Mill, Jennifer Lopez, Usher and many more pledged their support to the new initiative. It is unclear how this initiative will be enforced or monitored. Either way, this new initiative is definitely a step in the right direction for the entire industry.
