Apple TV+ will bring back Jake Gyllenhaal for a second season of Presumed Innocent. With the end of season one still shaking out, Apple TV+ promises season two will “unfold around a suspenseful, brand-new case.”
Season one of Presumed Innocent kicked off on June 12, 2024 with Gyllenhaal in the lead role of chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich. Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Peter Sarsgaard, O-T Fagbenle and Renate Reinsve rounded out the star-studded ensemble cast.
“The series takes viewers on a gripping journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when one of its own is suspected of the crime. The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” the show’s synopsis reads.
The show was originally promoted as an eight-episode limited series. However, Apple TV+ seemingly reconsidered after receiving high praise from fans and critics alike.
“A rare example of a TV drama which expands significantly on its original source material yet never feels baggy or indulgent, and will keep you guessing every step of the way,” Boyd Hilton of EMPIRE Magazine wrote.
“The show feels like a return to the kind of drama that was a staple of 1990s cinema: a gimmick-free, grown-up story driven by eternal human themes rather than timely social issues,” Dan Eivan of Financial Times adds.
The season one finale of Presumed Innocent is set to hit Apple TV+ on Wednesday, July 24. There is no word as to when season two will begin production.
