Where do we go from here? After the season four finale when Tariq St. Patrick avenged his sister’s death, we had more questions than answers. The feeling is no different after the fifth season premiere of Power. Centered around Raina’s funeral, the episode does its very best to show that everybody is implicated in some sort of crime as the title suggests. However, the episode does an even better job of showing that everyone and anyone can be touched at any point in time.
In “Everyone Is Implicated”, the show reminds us of the one thing fans have come to love most; anyone can get it. Ghost is shot during an attempt to kill Dre and Dre ends up one text from Tariq away from being murdered in public. The bottom line is that no one is invincible. Despite the fact that Dre thinks he’s untouchable because he’s working for the Jimenez Cartel, he forgets that they will kill anyone to protect their bottom line, even him. The second that he taunts Ghost, Kanan, and Tommy by giving them cards of death from the Jimenez Cartel is the moment he’s admitted defeat. Even in strength, Dre is admitting that he can’t handle Ghost, Kanan, and Tommy by himself. He needs help from the Jimenez Cartel and interestingly enough, Tariq.
While it becomes evident in the first episode of Power that at one point or another, Tommy, Ghost, and Kanan must deal with or work for the Jimenez Cartel it also becomes evident that one point or another Ghost must battle his son. One of the most important scenes in the fifth season premiere comes when Tariq breaks down while delivering his sister’s eulogy and runs to the bathroom. At first glance, it appears that he may have had an emotional breakdown, but that’s far from the case. Tariq uses his time in the bathroom to warn Dre that his father, Tommy, and Kanan have ordered a hit on him. Dre is able to get away, but it raises the question, “How long will it be until this comes back around to bit Tariq in the behind?” It’s unclear whether Tariq warns Dre because he hates his father enough to thwart his plans or he feels guilty about his sister’s death and wants this all to stop. There’s also the unsolved mystery about how, when and who actually pulled the trigger that ended up killing his sister’s murderer. Was it Dre and he managed to escape? It’s highly unlikely that happened, but it is very likely that whatever happens in season five will be the result of Tariq’s actions or mistakes. It’s scary to say this, but in this time of chaos, Tariq has become the most powerful character in Power because no one knows what he’s up to and no one has had the heart to kill him.
