During the weekend, video of a harrowing encounter during a Portland, Oregon protest surfaced. In the clip, it appears that a federal officer shot impact munition at a man named Donovan LaBella. The officer appears to hit LaBella, leaving him on the ground bleeding before being escorted an emergency room.
Video from a Andy Ngô shows LaBella standing outside of the Mark O. Hattfield U.S. Courthouse. As he stood outside, LaBella was holding a black speaker. While holding the speaker, a federal officer appears to throw a canister towards him. First, he tries to kick it away, but then appears to toss it back towards the courthouse. He then lifts the speaker above his head again before being shot in the head.
Details regarding Labella’s health are scarce. Initial reports suggest that he is in critical condition and will require surgery to repair facial and skull fractures he may have sustained. The video that has surfaced on social media also shows that he did lose a lot of blood during the ordeal.
At this time, the Portland Police Department nor federal authorities have not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting. There is no word as to whether they will face any disciplinary action.
