The third season has only just premiered on HBO, but “True Detective” showrunner Nic Pizzolatto has revealed he’s already considering ideas for a fourth season of the crime anthology series.
The show’s first season was overwhelmingly well-received by critics and audiences, but the second famously crashed and burned in flames. After a few years break, it returns with the new season which so far has been dubbed a return to form if not quite as first season heights.
Speaking to EW, Pizzolatto says a plan is in place should HBO with to proceed with more:
“Yeah, and it’s wild. It’s really, really wild. Where do you even go after this [season]? I just had a lead character who’s 35, 45 and 70 all at the same time and this mystery that has to reach false resolutions and keep going into the future without cheating the audience and all these complicated structural elements. But I have an idea that’s kind of crazy. I think it needs to percolate for a while. I was looking to do another series, maybe a movie, in the meantime, but yeah. I have an idea…”
The recent third season premiere returned to 1.4 million viewers in Live + Same Day ratings, while time-shifted viewing has substantially lifted that number to 2.3 million viewers. In comparison to recent HBO shows, it came ahead of “Sharp Objects” (1.3M) and “Big Little Lies” (1.1M).
“True Detective” continues on Sunday nights at 9 pm on HBO.
