The Pittsburgh Steelers enter training camp with a bunch of….drama. From Le’veon Bell holding out for a new contract to Ben Roethlisberger talking about retirement, there are plenty of talking points to go around. Speaking of talking points, let me give you some for training camp. Here’s what you should watch for.
Enjoy.
3 Position Battles To Watch
1. Backup Running Back
James Conner vs. Knile Davis vs. Fitzgerald Toussaint
Think of this battle as Bell looking for his assistant to the regional manager. It’s okay if you don’t, I will for you.
With Bell yet to show up to camp, these three running backs will have plenty of chances to prove they’re worth the second spot on the depth chart. Conner, a rookie out of Pitt, was impressing at camp before going down with a minor shoulder injury.
Watching @nflnetwork. Ike Taylor was asked who stood out today at @steelers first practice. He immediately responded: JAMES CONNER. #H2P

The injury is minor and he could return this week, giving Davis and Toussaint even more chances to prove their worth. You’ll want to keep up with this situation.
2. Wide Receiver
Everyone behind Antonio Brown
The Steelers are very deep at WR but find themselves in a weird spot during camp. Martavis Bryant is still wondering when he’ll be reinstated, Sammie Coates is recovering from surgery and rookie Juju Smith-Schuster is fighting a minor ankle injury.
Good times, good times.
With all of those big names absent from the camp field, that leaves guys like Eli Rogers, Justin Hunter and Demarcus Ayers the ability to get meaningful practice reps. The starting core is mainly locked down, but all these injuries give the usual backup players a chance to show they’re worth more regular season reps.
Watch to see who proves most valuable among the group throughout camp.
3. Linebacker
T.J. Watt vs. everybody
I’m choosing this because 1) the Steelers are mostly locked up for the 2017 season so there aren’t many “battles” and 2) Watt is showing he’s a force worth playing.
After just the first day of camp, Watt had many heads turned. LB Bud Dupree said Watt caught on faster than he did during his first offseason. With a guy like James Harrison atop the depth chart, Watt should be given many chances to play in the season. Being 39 isn’t easy in this league and the Steelers have already let Watt take first team reps while Harrison rests.
The message here is this: Watt is on a mission to show that he deserves meaningful playing time in his rookie year and he seems to be doing just that.
This isn’t just a battle between a few players, this is Watt vs. the world.
Ready to Breakout: Artie Burns
I picked Burns as my breakout guy for the Steelers in late June. Here’s why I’m excited to watch him in ’17.
I love his chances of breaking out in ’17 because he was thrown into the fire his first season, lining up against opponents top receivers. This offseason, he’s been covering Antonio Brown and has impressed Steelers Secondary Coach Carnell Lake.
“He’s being really physical. He’s challenging Antonio Brown, arguably one of the best receivers in the league, every day. That’s just going to make him better. The more competent he is covering somebody like AB, he should be able to transfer that to our competitors when we get ready to start the season.”
Burns recorded 52 tackles and hauled in three interceptions in his rookie campaign. His experience gained in year one plus his quickness will lead him to big things this season.
Fantasy Sleeper: Eli Rogers
I almost went with Martavis Bryant here but I think people are expecting a huge year out of him, which led me to Rogers. In his first season healthy, Rogers recorded 48 receptions for 594 yards and 3 TDs at the slot position. Big Ben said he sees growth in Rogers this offseason and is excited for what he’ll bring at the slot this year. Even though Brown and Bryant will dominate the receptions, look for Rogers to build off his numbers from ’16.
Rookie To Watch: James Conner AND T.J. Watt
Yeah, I broke the rules. I wanted to talk about both of these guys because they both are being hyped up during the offseason and beginning of camp. As stated earlier, Conner has been impressing with Bell absent and hopefully will return from his shoulder injury soon. I also wanted to include him so I could tell you to read his story if you haven’t because it’s inspiring. Heck, he was second in jersey sales just a few weeks ago, only behind Brady. The man is already well known around the league. If you need to know why I chose Watt as well, scroll back up to what I said about him. I kind of hyped him up.
The Pittsburgh Steelers enter ’17 with an incredibly talented roster. In what could be Big Ben’s last year in the NFL, it’s Super Bowl or bust. Yes, that probably is every team’s goal but it could realistically happen with this team. There should be fun times ahead for this team and its loyal fanbase.
