Gerald Green had a breakout season of sorts last year, averaging 15.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 44.5% from the field, 40% from 3 and 84.8% from the free throw line. Green started in 48 of the 82 games he played in last season.
This season has been a different story. Green has started just 4 games this year, and averaged just 19.3 minutes a game; 9.1 less than last season.
Green was benched on January 30 against the Chicago Bulls, due to matchup concerns against Jimmy Butler. Since that game Green’s role on the team continued to be reduced, and Green has become frustrated.
Following from Paul Coro of AZCentral Sports,
“In the beginning, I thought I was playing better than last year but I guess other people thought otherwise,” said Green, who started 48 games, averaged 15.8 points and made 40 percent of 3-pointers last season. “It hasn’t been the same (since the Chicago game). I ain’t gonna lie. It’s been frustrating because I know I can help win.”
Per Coro, Green says he doesn’t feel wanted in Phoenix.
“I want to be here but I just don’t know if they want me here,” Green said. “Because if you want somebody, you show them. I didn’t think I was playing that bad and now we’re here.”
Green’s frustrations have affected his performance on the court. Since his benching vs. the Bulls he has averaged 7.6 points on 39.4% shooting from the field, 26.2% from 3, and 61.1% from the foul line in just 14.7 minutes per game.
Green’s most recent game was an excellent one for him. He scored 24 points on 10-17 shooting, and played 22 minutes. However, even after a game like this one, Green still feels dejected. He told Coro:
“I feel like I could’ve helped a lot more than I did this season,” Green said. “Those decisions weren’t up to me. If I play, I’ll go out and give it my best. I don’t really get excited about games any more because I don’t know if I’m going to play. These type of games don’t excite me any more. They don’t give me confidence.
“I don’t want to get too excited because I know the next game I might not play.”
Gerald Green is set to become a free agency this offseason, and it’s looking like Phoenix may not remain his home past this year. However, with Green’s ridiculous athleticism and solid shooting stroke, he’ll find a home somewhere.
