Phoebe Waller-Bridge is having a pretty big week. According to Variety, the Emmy-award winning writer has signed a sizable deal with Amazon to develop exclusive content for Amazon Prime Video.
Waller-Bridge created the Amazon Original, Fleabag, which brought home a stunning 6 Emmy awards on Sunday night. She also created and wrote the first season of BBC America’s critically acclaimed series, Killing Eve. Specifics of the deal have yet to be made public but it’s reportedly worth around $20 million a year.
Waller-Bridge released a statement regarding the deal on Tuesday. “I’m insanely excited to be continuing my relationship with Amazon. Working with the team on Fleabag was the creative partnership dreams are made of. It really feels like home. I can’t wait to get going!”
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios released her own statement regarding the deal as well. “We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Phoebe at Amazon Studios! As evident in her great success at the Emmy Awards this week, she is clever, brilliant, generous and a virtuoso on multiple fronts including writing, acting and producing. Fleabag has been a gift to our Prime Video customers and we are excited for what comes next from this brilliant mind to dazzle and delight our global audience.”
Going into Sunday night, Amazon carried only 47 nominations to Netflix’s and HBO’s 132 and 117, respectively. However, Amazon managed to best Netflix’s 4 primetime wins with 7 of its own, nearly enough to beat HBO’s 9. NBC and FX both won 2 primetime Emmys while Hulu, BBC, and VH1 walked away with one each.
