San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers will enter the final season of his contract that will pay him $15.75 million in 2015. Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego is reporting that there has been “little urgency” from Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers in recent contract negotiations.
It’s unclear why Rivers has been neglecting contract talks but a large part of it could be because of the potential move to LA. He could also be willing to play the season out as a strong 2015 could jolt his value following the season. Rivers, 33, threw for 4,286 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2014.
It appears the Chargers plan on keeping Rivers throughout the end of his career. San Diego may have to opt for the franchise tag in 2016 if a deal does not come to fruition by next season. Nevertheless Rivers has said in the past he is willing to listen to anything regarding future talks.
“A lot of moving parts and lots to think about,” Rivers said, via Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune. “Location, family, team … All I can say at this point regarding an extension is I’m willing to listen to anything. I’m also willing to play it out. I’m just fired up to be the Chargers QB in 2015.”
Only time will tell if Rivers and San Diego can strike a deal by the end of training camp. Rivers isn’t the only high profile quarterback entering the final season of his contract as Russell Wilson is also negotiating his deal with Seattle as we speak.
