There is some talk in NBA circles that the Lakers have already got a big-name candidate ready to step into the role left by axed coach Mike Brown who departed after just five-games this season. Jerry Sloan and Mike D’Antoni were considered the early front-runners but former coach – and Kobe favorite – Phil Jackson will be approached by the franchise this weekend to gauge his interest in re-joining the Lake Show.
Executive vice president Jim Buss and the Lakers will likely move to find a new coach as soon as possible because interim man, Bernie Bickerstaff, has only committed to the head coaching role for a few days (he led the Lakers to a win last night against the Warriors.
One issue working against D’Antoni had been reports that he would not be able to coach immediately because of a knee replacement surgery but according to ESPN.com Los Angeles, he would be able to take the helm within 10-14 days if hired.
