As the Playoffs enter full swing. The New York Knicks. Are doing something. I don’t know what they’re doing. I just hope Phil Jackson is doing more than talking. I’ve heard a lot of chitter chatter from the Knicks head honcho, but nothing about what they’re actually going to do in the Draft or who they’re going for in free agency.
Alright, maybe he’s keeping his cards close to his chest. But at least we’re getting some sort of information. As he talks to Ian Begley of ESPN NY about the long-term and also the short-term future of the New York Knicks.
“We’ll consider everything,” Jackson said. “I mean, I want to be quite blunt with you and say, depending upon the lottery — everything starts when the picks come in on the 19th of May. Everything starts to germinate from there. Do you move a pick 1, 2, 3 or 4? Um, that’s questionable. Do you move a pick five if that’s the end result and use it as a chip? Maybe. So there’s a lot of options out there.”
“The reality is we want to grow a star through this system that’ll be here for 15 years and a career,” Jackson said. “We love the fact that 30 years ago Patrick Ewing … was a player with this organization for over 15 years. And that moved the franchise in a way which everybody recognizes. We think there are a couple of players in this draft that might be able to do that. So we’re certainly not going to walk away from a situation like that.”
“That’s what we’re after. We’re after winning,” Jackson said.
Right. So they’re looking for a player that will last 15 years. Similar to Patrick Ewing. I see the logic. But is Karl Anthony-Towns or Jahlil Okafor a Patrick Ewing incarnate? That remains to be seen. I wouldn’t mind if they traded their pick away. I would hate to rest my franchises future on a one and done player. Way too much of a crap shoot. Maybe Jackson has the stones to do it. But I want somebody I know I can rely on. Hey. Maybe they can get two or three solid players. I’m just throwing up ideas. Your move Mr Jackson.
