If you don’t like Batman prequels, I’ve got good news and bad news. Good news, Gotham is over. Bad news, Pennyworth is starting in July. Details about the prequel have been pretty hard to come by. It was previously announced that Jack Bannon will be portraying the titular butler with Ben Aldridge playing the role of a young Thomas Wayne. But, Wednesday, Epix finally gave fans a real look at the series with a new teaser.
Granted, it doesn’t reveal much more than we already know but, it does give us some insight into the style and tone of the show. It seems like it will be a violent affair as there are multiple shots of Alfred (and others) fighting. The series was also previously confirmed to carry a ‘Mature’ rating so, here’s to the gritty Alfred origin story no one asked for.
In all seriousness, the trailer teases the meeting of Thomas and Alfred as Wayne tells Pennyworth he “has a job” for him. Ultimately, this will be a Batman prequel in name only as it reportedly won’t feature any classic villains of the caped crusader. Instead, the series will focus on Pennyworth and Wayne as they start a security company in 1960s London. It will also apparently feature “archetypal villains and classic villains of British literature.”
