For Liggins, only the rest of the season will be guaranteed, an official told Def Pen Hoops. Several players have signed deals similar to this throughout the 2017-18 season.
With the move, the Pelicans now have 15 players under contract. They also have Emeka Okafor on a separate 10-day contract.
Liggins will provide the Pelicans wing depth for the remainder of the season, provided they decide not to waive him for another player or use him in a future trade.
The Pelicans lost All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins to a season-ending injury recently. The expectation around the league is New Orleans will explore the trade market on deadline day, but won’t pull the trigger on a deal unless they bring back a significant return in the package.
Liggins, 29, holds career-averages of 2.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 11.2 minutes with seven different teams. He’s also played some time in the G League and overseas.
Liggins made stops with Orlando, Oklahoma City, Miami, Cleveland, Dallas and Milwaukee before joining the Pelicans. He was drafted with the No. 53 pick by the Magic in 2011.
