The New Orleans Pelicans have underwhelmed this season. Or have they? I mean we (the fans and the media) hyped up Anthony Davis so much. I went as far as to say that he’ll win the MVP this season. We totally forgot that basketball is a team game and the team behind Anthony Davis is very below average. We found that out very quickly at the start of the season.
The Pelicans are 12th in the Western Conference, pretty much out of reach when it comes to making the Playoffs. It’s time to look ahead and the Pelicans are thinking of doing that.
“At some stage we have to start thinking about the future, looking at the future,” Gentry said after a 106-94 loss to the Utah Jazz dropped the Pelicans to 3-5 since the All-Star break. “That’s one of the reasons why I stuck Jrue [Holiday] out there to start the second half. We have to start looking at Jrue as a starter some and playing him. And trying to find ways to get Anthony [Davis] the ball more in the flow of the game. Even if they’re double-teaming him, that’s gotta be something as coaches that we try to figure out also.
“At this stage, like I said, it would be a miracle almost for us to make the playoffs. We really have to start looking at developing a culture and how we’re gonna play in the future and figuring out guys on this team, how they fit into the system and if they’re going to be able to fit in a system.“
Now to clarify, Gentry didn’t say it would be a miracle. He straight up took the Pelicans out of the picture and rightly received backlash for it.
The Pelicans shouldn’t consider the future, they should 100% dive into the future. They shouldn’t waste time thinking about it. Plan ahead, decide who you want in your core because just Davis won’t cut it, he needs a number 2 at least to help him out night by night.
